Terms of Service
Beta — draft policy. This document is published while legal review is completed. We will post a new version, with a new effective date, when that review lands.
MEC Labs Terms of Service
Between: you, and MEC Research Labs Ltd. ("MEC Labs", "we"), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Contact: [[email protected]].
These terms govern your use of meclabs.ca and its products, including Mastery and Ancestry. By creating an account you agree to them. We have kept them short and readable on purpose.
1. This is a Beta
Every surface of this service is marked Beta, and it means what it says: features change, imperfections exist, and although we back up data daily and take care described in our Privacy Policy, you should not treat this service as the only copy of anything irreplaceable. Ancestry lets you export your family tree (GEDCOM format) at any time — use it.
The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the extent permitted by law.
Where the Beta is available. During the Beta, the service is offered to residents of Canada only. It is not directed at, offered to, or intended for users elsewhere, and we may decline or close registrations from outside Canada. We expect to widen availability after the Beta; when we do, we will say so here first.
2. Your account
- You must be 16 or older to hold an account.
- Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for activity under your account. Tell us promptly if you believe it is compromised.
- One person, one account.
3. Your content
You may upload and create content: family records, photos, stories, notes, feedback ("your content").
You keep ownership. You grant MEC Labs a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide license to host, store, reproduce, and display your content as needed to operate the service — showing your tree to its members, making backups, generating thumbnails. That license is for running the service, nothing else: we do not sell your content, use it in advertising, or use it to train AI models.
You are responsible for having the right to share it. Upload only photos and stories you have the right to share, and record information about living relatives responsibly — see the Privacy Policy §4, which is part of these terms.
Shared family content survives individual departures. A family tree is a collective work. If you delete your account, facts and records you contributed to a shared tree remain with that family (your authorship identity is removed on request); your private, unshared content is deleted with your account. This mirrors how a family photo album works: a departing relative takes themselves, not the album.
We tell you this again, plainly, at the moment you delete your account — so that "delete" never means something different from what you expected.
4. Acceptable use
Do not use the service to:
- harass, impersonate, or defame anyone;
- record information about living people to stalk, expose, or harm them — Ancestry exists to connect families, and misuse of other people's personal information is the fastest way to lose your account;
- upload content that is unlawful, infringing, or that you lack rights to;
- probe, overload, or interfere with the service or other families' trees;
- attempt to access trees or data you have not been granted membership to.
We may remove content and suspend accounts to enforce this. Family-tree content additionally passes human review steps and member flagging; if your content is flagged, we review it and may remove it. To report content that harms you: [[email protected]] — you do not need an account, and we target an initial response within [7] days.
5. Our content, and AI-generated content
The service, its design, and the learning content in Mastery are MEC Labs' or its licensors' property. We grant you a personal, non-transferable right to use them through the service.
AI disclosure. Learning content in Mastery (lessons, figures, videos) is generated with AI assistance and human-reviewed. We work hard on accuracy and correct errors when found, but you should not treat any single statement as authoritative, and the service is not professional, financial, or exam-outcome advice. Certification exams belong to their issuing bodies: CAPM® and PMBOK® are registered marks of the Project Management Institute, Inc. MEC Labs is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by PMI, and passing scores are not guaranteed.
6. Liability, in plain terms
To the maximum extent permitted by law: our total liability to you for any claim arising from the service is limited to the greater of CAD $50 and the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim [the service is currently free — counsel to confirm figure]; and we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses, including loss of data beyond our backup obligations described in the Privacy Policy. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under British Columbia law, and nothing removes your rights under BC's consumer protection legislation.
You agree to stand behind your own content: if your content causes a legal claim against MEC Labs (for example, an infringing upload), you will cooperate with us and cover costs that result from your breach of §3–§4.
7. Ending things
You may stop using the service or delete your account at any time (Privacy Policy §7; the shared-content rule of §3 applies). We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these terms, with notice where practical. We may discontinue the Beta or features of it; if we discontinue Ancestry or the service as a whole, we will give at least [60] days' notice and keep export available throughout that period.
8. Housekeeping
- Governing law: British Columbia, Canada; courts of British Columbia have exclusive jurisdiction, subject to any consumer-law rights to sue locally.
- Changes: we will post updated terms with a new effective date and notify you in-product of material changes before they apply; continued use after that is acceptance.
- Severability: if part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest stands.
- Entire agreement: these terms plus the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about the service.
